IMG_4660Although the Crab Races on Saturday had to compete with the Michigan/Michigan State game, many people still came out to support the Manchester Community Schools Foundation, who put the “fun” in “fundraiser” with this popular annual event.

For $10 you could enter a crab into the races. A "heat" was run every 10 minutes with up to 15 crabs per race. After four heats, there was a final run-off of the top three crabs from each heat. The first, second, and third place winers were awarded $100, $50, and $25 respectively. They held 18 races all together.

The first place winners were Andrew Stallworth and Mitchell Ernst, who won two different run-offs. Ethan Villarreal and Megan Reppert were the second place winners. Megan placed second in two different run-offs as well. And the third place winners were Cameron Corwin, Reese Shoeneman and Eli Schmidt.

After a crab was done running, it could be taken home as a pet. According to Tina Maly, who helped organize the event, almost all of the crabs were taken home. The remaining 15 or 20 were taken by Kelly Ball for the after school program.

Everything for the night was donated.  As in past years, the crabs donated by Pet-N- Things in Saline. In addition, each heat had a sponser and Kleinschmidt sponsored the whole event. Even the art on display was provided by Mrs. Resh’s Klager classes.

All the money raised went to support the Manchester Community Schools Foundation, which gives mini-grants to teachers to fund educational opportunities outside the realm of the budget. The foundation is more than a decade old and has given out hundreds of thousands of dollars. Two of the most recent grants awarded were $4,500.00 for Leveled Literacy Intervention System and $6,338.95 for the Olweus Bullying Program at Klager Elementary and the Middle School.

For as little as $1 a month, you can keep Manchester-focused news coverage alive.
