Do you remember the 1988 movie, “Big”?  The movie starred Tom Hanks as a boy, Josh Baskin, who wished to be “big” at a magic wish machine and then magically woke up the next morning to find himself in an adult body with adult responsibilities.

Samantha Seegert didn’t have a magic wish machine, but she did have a magic ticket (not to be confused with the Wonka golden ticket, of course!)  During the Fall Festival, Samantha entered into a drawing to be Principal for the Day—and won!  So on Monday, December 16th, Samantha woke up and found herself as the Principal of Klager Elementary.

After arriving at school (and checking in with her teacher), she reported for work.  Her first duty of the day was morning announcements and reciting the pledge of allegiance.

According to Mrs. Mayes, Samantha was busy throughout the day until dismissal.  “We toured a couple of classrooms and performed some mini-observations (3rd and 4th grade).  She helped monitor in the cafeteria and helped to supervise 4th grade sledding during noon recess.  She ate a late lunch in the principal's office after students had finished their lunches and recesses."

Samantha helped to present and model the respect circle lesson on hallway expectations to the kindergarten students. She helped put away a delivery of supplies that had arrived, in the proper storage area and helped sort and deliver "Pete the Popcorn" books to the children who had ordered them.  Finally, Samantha dismissed the busses via radio at the end of the day.

What a great opportunity for a child to be the principal for a day.  Similar to workplace events where parents bring their children to work with them, this day was a chance for a student to learn at least a small portion of the tasks that Mrs. Mayes has to perform every day and develop a special bond with her principal.  This will be a day that she won’t soon forget.  But, I’ll bet that similar to Josh Baskin, she was glad to just be a kid again on Tuesday morning.
