Not only can one find intellectual inspiration among the books at the Manchester District Library, but one can also find creative inspiration. Art from Manchester High School students is displayed each spring, work from Chinese children was recently showcased, and Library Board Trustee David W. Nelson and artist Marianne Cenko, a former Manchester resident, have both shared their craft. Through the end of January 2014, the library is excited to showcase the wonderfully gifted and creative local artist, Margaret Shaw. Items on display include whimsical boxes, button figurines, hand-made soap, paintings and textiles.

Like the act of breathing, Margaret finds creativity a necessary part of life. She has no standard source of materials; Margaret is continually looking at things with questions and ideas. Objects on the side of the road, thrift store findings, and goods at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Ann Arbor provide materials; Margaret comes up with ideas that manifest and evolve her passion. Additionally, Margaret puts to use more immediate items most people have around such as cardboard and old sweaters. Some of us throw it away, some give it away, and some recycle. Margaret practices repurposing.

Margaret Shaw speaks about her need to create and be creative with intense passion. Although she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Margaret views her art as separate from that education. Observing the creativity and make-do spirit of both her mother and great-grandmother, Margaret has always put into practice her philosophy of leaving a light foot print.

Ingenuity guides the life of Margaret as she enters a new phase. Dubbed “610” for her address on City Road, this new project can be followed on her blog at http://www.mshaw-folkart.com/. 610 is yet another canvas for the artist’s expression. Painted floors, unique door trim, repurposed hollow core doors, and vibrant colors are all transforming this space into a welcoming space.

Margaret plans to offer classes and space for others to express and find their own creativity. On Thursdays, Margaret would like to share her studio as she explores developing her own still life skills.

On January 28, the Manchester District Library is inviting the public to meet Margaret who will informally talk about her work and answer questions. Curious about how to repurpose anything from an old sweater to a broken kitchen utensil? Margaret has the answer or will help you discover your own. Interested in her work, creative process, or the classes she is offering? Mark your calendar for this evening with the artist.

The following is a sample of just some of her work on display:
