The Manchester Co-Op Pre-School (MCP) is located at 410 City Road, in the Ackerson Building.  It currently offers 2 classes: a Three Year Olds class that meets 2 mornings a week and a Four Year Olds class that meets three mornings a week, and next year will off a new Young Fives program.

The Three and Four Year Olds programs offer play-based learning opportunities.  MCP has large classrooms and unique opportunities for parents to help in the classroom. Kids learn social skills training, conflict resolution, friendship building, communication, pre-academic learning, early literacy, early math, science, art, and music.  MCP also offers dramatic play, fine motor skills activities, gross motor skills activities, enrichment trips, in class visitors, cooking, and community service.

The Young Fives Program is specifically designed to prepare children for kindergarten. The program will offer a unique blend of preschool themes with kindergarten activities which will help children not quite ready for kindergarten develop independence. It will meet all day, M-W-F, as a combined class with the four year old preschoolers in the morning and alone in the afternoon with more of a kindergarten focus. The children will have opportunities to play, but academics will be emphasized. The class size is limited to 12 students so that each child gets individual attention. The program will include pre-math, pre-literacy, art, science activities, music, movement, and more.

Young Fives is for children who could enroll in kindergarten but whose parents feel they need a transitioning year. In Michigan, children are required to start school by the age of 6. In order to be a part of the Young Fives program next fall, children need to turn 5 by Jan. 1, 2015.  The Young Fives program is not associated with the Manchester Community Schools.

MCP follows the N.A.E.Y.C (National Association for the Education of Young Children) guidelines for the developmentally appropriate practices in a preschool program, as well as the MiAEYC (Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children) standards of quality when developing it's curriculum.

MCP is different from other pre-schools and young fives programs in that it is a co-op.  That means parents participate in the running of the school.  Parents organize fundraisers, serve on the board, plan outings and parties, and serve as room parents.  All parents are required to spend some time helping at least one of the these tasks.  Parents also attend regular meetings and vote on co-op business.

Tuition is $75 per month for the Threes class, $90 per month for the Fours class, and will be $200 per month for the Young Fives program.  Scholarships are available.

MCP is now enrolling children in all three programs for next fall.  Please contact Co-Op president Amelia Woods (woodsie668@aol.com) or president-elect Sarah Andrews (sandrewsabc@yahoo.com) for more information.
