High School Band Awards

A few weeks ago the Manchester High School Band had their spring concert and awards ceremony.  We wanted to take a moment to share who the award recipients were with our readers.

The winners of the awards are as follows:

Director’s Award for Band (8th Grade)

  • – Megan Jacobs – Percussion
  • – Cozette Cecconie

 

Agnes Vechinski Harmony Award

  • – Caitlyn Baskins – Flute
  • – Daniel Korth – Clarinet

  • – Brandon Hieber – Tuba and Drum Major

Christopher Kieb Memorial Scholarship ($1000)

  • – Tom O’Hotzke – Trombone

Chris was a former percussion instructor with the Manchester Bands who died unexpectedly.  His family set up a Scholarship in his memory and each year they award a $1000 scholarship to a Manchester Band member.  The only requirement is that they take a music class in college.

Louis Armstrong Award

  • – Carl Murphy – Bass Guitar

The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award is an Instrumentalist Magazine Award and was inaugurated in 1974 with the consent of his widow shortly after this great jazz artist died in 1971. It honors the outstanding jazz musician at each high school.

 

John Philip Sousa Award

  • – Tom O’Hotzke

The John Philip Sousa Award is another Instrumentalist Magazine award and was introduced in 1955 to honor the top student in the high school band.  It was created with the approval of Helen Sousa Albert and Priscilla Sousa, daughters of the famous composer and bandmaster.  The John Philip Sousa Band Award recognizes superior musicianship and outstanding dedication.
