Editor's Note: She's back! Our own secret food critic paid a visit to the Chicken Broil.

Yeah, yeah, yeah I haven’t written lately. I was off on a food tour in India ...but I came back... for the Chicken Broil.

For the last few years, I have been getting my Manchester Chicken Broil chicken to go. I decided this year to eat my chicken, not out of the box, but on a plate. My family, which includes my kids, husband, mom, grandma, sister, aunt and family friend, all stood in line to get our chicken. The line was on the shorter side. We passed the booth where they announce visitors from around Michigan and, in some cases, the world. We checked out pit 1, said hi to grandpa, my brother and friends, then off to chicken we went.

We handed in our tickets and got handed plates each with half a chicken on it. Next, coleslaw, radishes, rolls and bags of chips. We got our drinks and sit down. No, not in the shade because it wouldn’t be chicken broil without the blazing sun.

I try the coleslaw first. The coleslaw is made by boy scouts and men off all ages. The recipe is a closely guarded secret and worth guarding. Its vinegary crunch tastes like tradition.

Finally the time is here! Chicken!

I take the first bite and it tastes like…here is the thing...you can’t taste Manchester Chicken Broil chicken without tasting the sounds, sights, and feelings that go along with the Chicken Broil. So yeah it’s the best chicken ever but it is also the best memory ever.

It tastes like rainy Chicken Broils where the kids sat under the tables to try to stay dry and the adults pretended like it wasn't raining. It tastes like standing in line for 45 min and still having fun. It tastes like Chicken Broils past with family that is no longer with us.

I guess my review of the Manchester Chicken Broil food cannot be told by the greatness of the food but the greatness of the event. The best part is I now have new memories to remember next year when I take that first awesome bite.
