Young Guns vs. Sheriff's Department

shotgun trapOn Saturday, August 30, 2014, the Manchester Young Guns challenged the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department to a Trap Shoot, a first for the Manchester Sportsman Club.

Manchester fielded two squads (maroon and yellow) of five each to compete against the sheriff’s department. The Manchester teams were squadded to make them equally competitive and shooting position was determined by a drawing. To help make the shoot a little more enjoyable for the sixty plus spectators, ten “Flash Targets” were put in the trap carousel. A flash target has powder in it that, when hit, emits a visible puff of powder, which is very easy to see.

After the regular competition was over, the competitors continued shooting by playing a couple of shotgun games, “Back-up and Last man standing”. Back-up has a two-man team on each station. The shooter on the left calls for the target -- if he hits it the team stays in, if he misses the target and his team member hits it, the team stays in. If they both miss, they are out. If the first shooter breaks the target and the second shooters shoots, they are out. This continues until only one team remains. Last man standing consists of a group of shooters in a straight line. Starting from the left, three shooters get ready to shoot at a target, the person to the left calls for the target, if he shoots and hits the target, everyone is safe. If he misses and the next shooter shoots and hits the target, the first shooter is out. If the first two shooters miss and the third shooter hits the target, the first two shooters are out. This continues until only one person remains, and becomes the winner.

The competitors were enjoying the games so much that they did not want to quit. But the games were brought to a close in order to present the award to the winner. Actually, everyone was a winner -- spectators and competitors! Everybody in attendance got to see each other in a different light. The youngsters got to see the local police as individuals who enjoy a good time just the same as the youngsters and the parents and spectators were rewarded watching this good natured competition. This competition will be repeated next year with the sheriff’s department promising to win the trophy and the young guns vowing to keep it.

The squads' final rankings were: yellow squad with a final score of 105, maroon squad had a 104, and the sheriff’s team had a 100.
