Today, I made the season's first apple crisp to take to a dinner party. I've been making this dessert for 20 years and every time I'm sure was the best. It's good hot, it's good cold, it's reeeeaallly good for breakfast the next morning with a cup of coffee. Tonight, we ate it a la mode after a perfect fall meal of smoked pork shoulder, slaw, and German potato salad.

4-6 good sized apples
scant c. sugar
scant c. oats
¼ c. whole wheat flour
½ c. butter
¼ t. salt (optional)
½ t. cinnamon, or to taste

Preheat oven to 375. Core and coarsely chop apples and pile evenly in a 9x12 lasagna pan. Melt butter and pour over dry ingredients and mix til combined. Spread oat mixture evenly over apples and bake at 375 for about 45 minutes or until golden brown and bubbling.
