Saint Joseph Mercy Health System announced last week that St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea recently received recognition for excellence in stroke care by earning a Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission and the American Stroke Association, which recognizes hospitals that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care.

According to The Joint Commission, the achievement of the Certificate of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers indicates that the medical services provided have the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving stroke outcomes. It is the best signal to the community that the quality care provided is effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients.

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and is a leading cause of adult disability, according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, someone dies of a stroke every four minutes, and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
