Wrestlers successful in District competitions

All 14 Dutch wrestlers who competed in individual District competition in Clinton on Saturday will have the opportunity to advance to Regional contests next week.

District champions (pictured in front center of photo at left, holding their bracket posters) included Reese Fry at 112#, Blake Belaire at 135#, and Charlie Depp at 215#. Fry pinned Christian Zimmerman of Lutheran High School of Westland to come in first place; Belaire overcame Tyler Boshears of New Haven to earn his medal; and Depp won three matches on Saturday, each by a fall.

Six grapplers brought home second-place medals, including Drew Gebhardt, 103#; Jacob Shelby, 119#; Jacob Kurgin ,140#; Derek Guenther, 152#, Collin McCaffrey, 160#, and Nick Phillips, 171#. In third place, Manchester had Grant Tungate at 130#, Josh Bunn at 135#, Max Wagner at 145#, and Simon Lato at 285#. Travis Withrow, wrestling at 189#, came in fourth in his weight class.

Earlier in the week, the Dutch wrestling team won its 12th Team District Wrestling Championship on Feb. 8, dominating the competition from Webberville 66-15, and Dansville, 78-3, in competition held at Dansville High School.
