Luther C. Klager Elementary School received a large donation of back to school supplies last week from the Manchester Knights of Columbus, Fr. Edwin A. Fisher Council 4354 and St. Mary Catholic Church Manchester. Donations included pencils, paper, crayons, markers and tissues as well as sanitary wipes, pencil cases, folders and backpacks were collected as well. Manchester High School teacher and organizer of the collection drive, Mark Ball added, “Those items still don’t tell the whole story, though, as countless other thoughtful supplies were generously given so that many less fortunate young students have access to items that others take for granted.”

This is the third year the Knights of Columbus and St. Marys collected supplies for Manchester Community Schools. Ball came up with this idea attending mass on vacation in Arizona, while visiting his daughter. They were holding a school supply drive and he thought it was an amazing idea. After he returned to Manchester he told his fellow Knights about it at their next meeting. They agreed and he was given the green light to go ahead by St. Marys priest Father Bosco.

They collect supplies over four weekends and alternate each year between helping Klager Elementary and Riverside Intermediate Schools because that is where they see the most need for their supplies donation.

Ball stated, "Programs like this are the foundation of what makes living in a small, caring community so rewarding.  Thank you to St. Mary Catholic Church and especially to the Knights of Columbus for spearheading this program.  Look for more programs sponsored by the K of C in the future like youth contests, a Tootsie Roll Drive to raise funds for intellectually disabled persons, and assisting St. Mary’s in the return of our famous Fish Fries during Lent before Easter."
