Gentlemen, Start Your Engines! – The Annual Awana Grand Prix Race
Okay…maybe not, but a pinewood-derby-type race is the closest thing we’re going to get to Nascar in February in Michigan!
The annual Awana Grand Prix was held at Community Bible Church on Wednesday night. Sixteen cars competed against each other for the top prizes in speed and design. The Awana program has been holding Grand Prix events for over 50 years and it’s more than just building a race car, it builds a bond between kids and their parents, as well as bringing community together to support their children. Community Bible held a family meal prior to starting the race, reinforcing the bonding of the community.
Each family had the option of purchasing a car kit or building their car from scratch as long as the car did not weigh more than 5.0 ounces. If it was under 5.0 ounces, they were encouraged to add decorative weights to the vehicle so that all cars were essentially comparable. They were able to decorate the vehicle to their own liking and the more creative the better! Each participant received a ribbon, but the top three winners in speed and design received a trophy for hard work.
