Author Monica Harris Delights and Inspires Klager Kids

Monica Harris, author of 11 books for children, gave all the kids at Klager an entertaining insight into the life of a working writer. Harris came prepared with a fun disposition, and a detailed understanding of her audience. She was ready with a clear question-and-answer PowerPoint presentation – pictures of stinky shoes, alien creatures, and a sumo wrestler. Klager children learned that writing is a fun, creative career where hard work, perseverance, and a sense of play are all necessary for success.

For the younger children, Harris enthusiastically read one of her own books, about a rooster with laryngitis. And for older children, she came prepared with a simple writing exercise that encouraged children to build a list of favorite animals, and then a list of attributes for one of those animals. The activity was the first stage of a potential non-fiction writing project.
