Last Day of School Changed to June 11th
Because of this winter’s exceptional weather and the resulting large number of snow days, the school year was extended by a week, earlier this spring, to end on a half day, June 13th. Because of the recent passage of HB 4295, the way school districts can handle make-up days this year has been altered. As a result, The Manchester Community Schools was able to shave a day and a half of school from the calendar. Superintendent Cherie Vannatter distributed a letter this past week indicating the change. The last day of school will now be a full day, June 11th.
HB 4295 allows school districts that had scheduled more than 174 days of instruction in the 2013-2014 school year to provide at least 174 days instead of their scheduled number in excess of that amount, so long as they still meet the minimum 1,098 hours within those 174 days.
It also allows school districts to receive their full state aid for make-up days if at least 60% of their students attend on that day, which is less than the current requirement of 75%. If less than 60% of a school district’s students attend the make-up day, then the school district may still receive state aid on a prorated basis of the percentage of students who actually attend that day.
The letter from Superintendent Vannatter:
Hello parents and community,
As part of the 2013-2014 School Aid Supplemental Bill that was passed by the Michigan
Legislature on April 14th, the required number of days for Michigan schools was altered for the 2013-
2014 school year. This change in the law will allow Manchester Community Schools to vary from the
original snow day make-up plan that was shared with everyone.
The Original Make-Up Plan
The district will conduct full days of school on June 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. The school year will
end with a half-day on June 13th.
The New Make-Up Plan
The district will conduct full days of school on June 6th, 9th, 10th, and 11th. The school year will end for
students with a FULL-day on June 11th.
Please help us spread the word to all stakeholders in the Manchester Community.
Again, the end of year calendar will be:
Friday June 6 Full Day for Students
Monday June 9 Full Day for Students
Tuesday June 10 Full Day for Students
Wednesday June 11 Full Day for Students (Last Day for Students)
Your child(ren)’s attendance on these make-up days is critical to their education. Student attendance also
effects our state funding. Please make every effort to have your child(ren) attend these final days of the
2013-2014 school year.
Thank you,
Cherie Vannatter
Superintendent
