logo squareBoth Jennifer Mayes and Shanna Spickard were recently named to pivotal positions within the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association (MEMSPA).  According to Jennifer Mayes, both she and Shanna Spickard are “working diligently to establish Manchester’s name as a frontrunner in educational leadership.”  Mrs. Mayes and Mrs. Spickard have a “passion for addressing the challenges facing education today at both the state and national level.”  Congratulations to both of these women making great strides in their profession.

MEMSPA is an organization with the dual role of setting standards within the profession of school principal and also protecting public interests – the education of children.

MayesJennifer Mayes has been elected to MEMSPA’S State and Federal Relations Coordinator.  As federal relations coordinator, she will serve as chair of the MEMSPA legislative committee and as a key contact to NAESP (National Association of Elementary School Principals).

The legislative committee deals with issues specific to political activities at the State and Federal level.  Indeed, one of the key purposes of the organization is to influence the legislative process.  Their statement of purpose indicates that the organization works to influence the legislative process in the interest of children and helping schools to offer the best possible educational programs for all children.

This is where Mrs. Mayes will now focus her efforts within MEMSPA. Mrs. Mayes will be fulfilling the final year of a term vacated by a principal who is relocating out of state. She has the option of running for an additional term at the end of this appointment.

Shanna2Shanna Spickard has been elected as president-elect for the upcoming 2014-2015 year.

As president-elect, she is the second-highest ranking elected officer in the association and will assume the presidency at the conclusion of her term in 2015 (or earlier if a vacancy should occur in that office.) Mrs. Spickard will be the president during the 2015-2016 year and then continue on the board as past-president for one year afterward, as well.

She indicated that she is honored to have been nominated and selected by her peers for these positions. “I am very excited about the MEMSPA President-Elect position and being on the state board for the next three years. MEMSPA has been valuable to me and my development as well for the district, county, and state. I look forward to learning more, networking, advocating for rural schools, and bringing a middle school perspective to the organization.”

Though these positions will obviously require some of their time, Jennifer Mayes assures that the “new roles will have minimal impact on our duties as administrators in the district, as our commitment to the education of Manchester students will remain our number one priority.”

It is truly a great distinction to have not one, but two, of our principals recognized by their peers as leaders in their field.  Congratulations to both Mrs. Jennifer Mayes and Mrs. Shanna Spickard as they enter into this exciting time in their careers.
