Letter to the Editor: Treasurers’ Race Raises Questions
7/20/2014
Letter to the Editor
Township government serves several important functions, and the primary on August 5 could be a major turning point, when Manchester Township and Village residents will be asked to choose between two candidates for Township Treasurer. I support Laurie Carey, who was appointed to be Treasurer after the former Treasurer resigned last year. She served as Deputy Treasurer for seven years before she was appointed to fill a portion of the remaining term. The primary will determine who will serve the remainder of the term, which ends in 2016.
Laurie’s opponent, Rebekkah Pratt, has provided no evidence she is qualified to be Treasurer. Laurie Carey is very qualified due to her experience as Deputy Treasurer for seven years. Our township finances are in excellent shape thanks to former Township Supervisor Ron Mann’s knowledge and experience with budgeting and his ability to work with the board to ensure our tax dollars are well managed. It is critical that we maintain continuity in the Treasurer’s position over the next two years by voting for Laurie Carey on August 5.
It is extremely likely that whoever wins the primary will become Treasurer. Regardless of your political persuasion, you can vote the Republican side of the ballot. There are no contested races on the Democratic side of the ballot, and state law allows each voter to decide which primary to participate in. Your vote for Laurie Carey will ensure the continuity that our township deserves. There is still time to get an absentee ballot if you can’t get to the polls on Tuesday, August 5.
Sincerely,
Sybil Kolon, Manchester
