Back In January of 2014 Sarah Andrews began going to Boot Camp classes and LOVED them. She loved the energy, loved that every workout was different, and loved that everybody could benefit from a Boot Camp-style workout.  Now, just one year later, Andrews has become a Certified Group Fitness Instructor and opened her own fitness gym here in Manchester called “The Distance”.  Located at the corner of Main and Clinton streets she has a very visible downtown location with plenty of parking.

Andrews wanted to open The Distance in Manchester to share her love of Boot Camp classes.  She also wanted to give more people the opportunity to realize that by pushing boundaries, mentally and physically, they not only gain strength and endurance, they gain LIFE! The response to The Distance has been much greater than she ever expected.  Since opening on January 5 she is seeing nearly 100 people attending class each week.

Andrews says “many people hesitate when they hear this is a High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT type of workout.  But we work together to customize the workout of the day to your fitness needs and stress that this is your workout at your pace.”  High Intensity Interval Training, simply put, means you work out in intervals alternating between activities that give you a high heart rate and activities that cause lower heart rates.  The rotation of the intervals or circuits can be customized to the individual as well as the intensity of the intervals.  This is a complete and total body work out focusing on cardio, strength, flexibility, and agility. These are no pressure workouts. “Your work out; your pace” Andrews says “I just give guidelines and you choose how you want to feel”.

This is not a typical gym where you show up and “hit the weights”.  When you show up it’s to attend an instructed class and classes are designed to be engaging and empowering. As people get more familiar with the HIIT workout, Andrews hopes to add some open gym time so class participants can come in and work through circuits on their own.

Because there is a 20 person max to each class, Andrews asks that you preregister for classes but you don’t have to commit to taking classes for any length of time. The Distance is run with a “drop in” philosophy.  Classes are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.  Andrews hopes to add more class times this summer in addition to adding yoga classes.  There is no membership. You can purchase an unlimited monthly pass or “punch” cards for either 10 or 20 visits.
