A Manchester area group called “Stewards of Western Washtenaw,” whose purpose it is to preserve Western Washtenaw’s rural environment and clean water will be bringing a Scio Township group, Citizens for Oil Free Backyards (COFBY), to give  a presentation at the Manchester Township board meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at 7:30 p.m in the Township Hall Board Room, 275 South Macomb (same building as the Fire Department).

Stewards of Western Washtenaw stated that many oil drilling leases have already been signed in Manchester and Sharon Townships and that under current law, an oil drill can be placed 300 feet from a homeowner’s water well.

The COFBY presentation will inform the board about ordinances townships can enact to mitigate the harmful effects of oil drilling, such as noise, night flares, possible water contamination, road damage, and fire and safety issues. Residents will also receive information on their rights regarding oil drilling on or near their property.

COFBY is a non-profit, all-volunteer group funded by solely by donations. The group formed in May 2014 as a grassroots organization of citizens opposed to oil and gas exploration and development near homes and a Huron River tributary in Scio Township. Its goal is to defend the quality of life and the environment in Scio and other communities in Michigan by opposing oil and gas development in residential and rural-residential areas, near preserved areas, and near water resources. One of the main ways they do this is by working for local zoning control for townships as well as working to change the way the oil and gas industry functions in Michigan.

COFBY also presented at the Sharon Twp. board meeting on Thursday, March 5.
