Local Girl Scout, Phoenix Waters’s Summer Service in Governor’s Honor Guard
Phoenix Waters spent 10 days this summer serving as part of the Mackinac Island Governor’s Honor Guard.
The Honor Guard is made up of scouts in 6th-12th grade. Each summer 60 girl scouts are chosen from the state of Michigan to serve on the island. Selections are made based on GPA, extra curricular, community service, and scouting service history. Applying scouts must submit an application as well as recommendations from community leaders. Scouts begin training in February working on marching drills, flag etiquette, and island history before leaving for service in late August.
Phoenix’s primary duty post was raising and lowering the flag at the governor’s residence where she had a chance to speak personally with Gov. Rick Snyder and was invited to participate in a game of kick ball with him outside the scout barracks. Phoenix also served as a fort guide at Fort Mackinac.
In her spare time Phoenix enjoys deer hunting, studying, wrestling, and local scouting with troop 40286 where she is a senior patrol leader. You can also find her on the football field every Wednesday night with the rest of Manchester’s 7th grade football team.
Phoenix is the daughter of Jeff and Connie Waters of Manchester and the granddaughter of Jerry and the late Jone Waters of Manchester, Loretta and Robert Roak of Dahlonega, GA and the late Roger Tyler of Dahlonega, GA.
