Manchester’s senior citizens are invited to come share a meal and more with the third and fourth grade students of Klager Elementary School on Wednesday, December 9, at 10:45 am.  In addition to a complimentary lunch of green beans, ham and scalloped potatoes, the seniors will receive homemade pie, entertainment, and a brief tour of the building by Klager’s young leaders. No RSVP is necessary.

Klager Elementary has been hosting a senior/student meal for close to 25 years. In recent years the number of seniors attending has declined. Karin Villarreal, Klager’s principal, is hoping to reverse this trend. She stated that there has been confusion in the past whether seniors needed a grandchild or other connection to the school to attend. That is not the case. All seniors living in the Manchester area are encouraged to come.

One of the highlights of the program is the seniors and older students enjoying desert together. The seniors get to choose from a large selection of homemade pies baked by 3rd & 4th grade families. The students get to eat cookies.

The PTO pays for the luncheon and brings volunteers for food service, pie cutting and plating, set up and clean up.  The National Honor society sends high school students to help with set up, clean up, and pie and cookie service.  Each year the program is arranged and supported by the teachers of Klager. The staff, PTO, and National Honor Society students all work together seamlessly to make this an enjoyable event for the students and seniors to remember.
