Washtenaw Conservation District Annual Meeting

David Konkle, Board member with the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association will present the program, “Renewable Energy in Michigan: Now And In The Future” at the Washtenaw County Conservation District’s 68th Annual Meeting, to be held Thursday, January 21, 2016, 6:30 p.m. at the Washtenaw County Farm Council Grounds, 5055 Ann Arbor-Saline Road. The public is welcome to attend.

Mr. Konkle began his energy career working for Sunstructures, an architecture company involved with solar energy and energy studies, then became Energy Coordinator for the City of Ann Arbor. Following twenty years as Energy Coordinator, Knokles worked as Energy Programs Director for the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority. David is a nationally known speaker, and has received a number of energy use related awards.

A buffet dinner will open the District Annual Meeting. Donations for dinner are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under. Reservations are needed for the dinner and should be made by January 15, 2016. To make reservations, call the District Office at: (734) 761-6721 extension 5. Payment can be made at the door the night of the meeting.

The meeting will also include the presentation of two conservation awards. The “Walter Wolfgang Memorial” Conservation Farmer of the Year Award will be presented to John and Jean Cares of Webster Township, and the Tree Conservationist Award will be presented to Ed and Robin Wojtys of Northfield Township.

The Cares are being recognized for their conservation farming efforts—including no-till; variable rate fertilizer application; cover crops; abandoned well closures; a forest management plan; and Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) verifications in the cropping and livestock systems.

The Wojtys’ are being recognized for excellent tree planting efforts—including planting approximately 6,000 trees since 1985, and their overall stewardship ethic.
