Manchester farmer Mike Fusilier was recently featured in an article and video in Michigan Farm News highlighting his test use of a biodegradable plastic film to mulch his crops. The film, made by BASF, the largest chemical producer in the world, is made of a combination of a renewable resource derived from sugar and non-renewable petrochemicals. While the majority of its components are still fossil fuel derived, it presents a significant environmental improvement over traditional plastic films which are 100% fossil fuel derived and end up in landfills.

“Michigan Farm Board member, Mike Fusilier, a Washtenaw County produce grower, has been testing Organix AG Compostable Mulch Film. He recently chisel plowed remnants of the eco-friendly plastic into his fields. If all goes as promised, the product will naturally decompose, saving Fusilier time and money.

Conventional polyethylene plastic that has to be pulled from fields is an intensive job…”
