More to love at the Chicken Broil
Volunteers are still needed for the multitude of tasks that are part of the annual Chicken Broil.
There is a job for everyone, according to co-chair Mike Tindall. “Anyone who lives in the Manchester area should consider this article an invitation to work at the broil,” he said. “People always say they would like to work at the broil, but have never been asked. Well, this is their invitation.”
Anyone (primarily of the male species) is welcome to come down to Alumni Field and be put to work. Or call Tindall at 734-320-2620. Broiling begins at noon and most of the other tasks begin at about 3:30 p.m. The reason for the emphasis on men, we’re told, is that when the Chicken Broil started back in the 1950s, it was notable as a day when the men cooked for the women!

The Chicken Broil has given back to the community in a wide variety of ways over the years. From a new fence around the athletic field paid for by the inaugural event in 1954, to a $20,000 pledge to the Manchester Area Historical Society’s crowd funding campaign to renovate the Kingsley-Jenter House in 2016, and dozens more projects in between, the profits from this event always directly benefit Manchester.

Once again this year there will be a cruise format classic car show on Alumni Memorial Field.
