You’re invited to the Library’s book discussion group
The Book Discussion Group at the Manchester District Library has announced the selected books for their September 2016 through June 2017 session. The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm to discuss that month’s book.
September’s book is 13 Ways of Looking by Colum McCann. It’s a collection of short fiction in which McCann charts the territory of chance, and the profound and intimate consequences of even our smallest actions. It was named one of the best books of the year by the New York Times Book Review and NPR, among others. You can pick up a copy of this month’s book, as well as a list of the year’s selected books, at the Manchester District Library at 912 City Road. The book group’s next meeting will be Wednesday, September 21, at 7pm in the library. All are welcome!
Book clubs have surged in popularity in recent years, and their appeal continues to grow by offering myriad benefits for even seasoned readers. They get members to read outside their usual preferences and explore a wide range of genres. This can help readers discover new favorite authors and open up new avenues of interest to explore. They also inspire closer reading, knowing that details will need to be recalled and discussed. In addition to encouraging expression of opinions in a non-judgmental environment, book clubs also help members better understand what they’ve read by exposing them to the views and insights of others in the group. Perhaps most importantly, by fostering camaraderie with local fellow bibliophiles, book groups stimulate an appealing sense of community.
