October Book Discussion Group at the Manchester District Library
submitted by Mireille Prusak, the Manchester District Library
The October book for the Book Discussion Group at the Manchester District Library is Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande, MD, MPH. It is a work of nonfiction which examines quality of life in a person’s last weeks or months. It discusses how modern medicine often offers false hopes through ineffective treatments which actually shorten lives rather than improving them. Instead, Dr. Gawande argues in this book, the goal of medicine should be to focus on achieving a good quality of life right up to the very end.
You can pick up a copy of this month’s book, as well as a list of the year’s selected books, at the Manchester District Library at 912 City Road. The book group’s next meeting will be Wednesday, October 19, at 7 pm in the library. All are welcome.
