Local Robotics team in its second year
Manchester High Schools FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team is gearing up for its competitive season. Their first event is taking place on March 2nd-4th at Southfield High School. High schools from around the country have been busy building their own robots to prepare to compete against other schools in local tournaments. Manchester Community Schools is in its second season of competition.
The mission of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) Robotics is to engage students in science and technology learning, while contributing to the nation’s technological enterprise. Manchester FIRST does this through creative, hands-on STEM competitions. The goal of the program is to get youth excited about science and technology, and pursuing related studies and careers.
From an academic standpoint, FIRST is a hands-on STEM education program. Through FIRST academic competition experiences, students can work “FIRST hand” with scientists, engineers, and technicians who serve as mentors and coaches in a collaborative, professional environment. FIRST programs are research based and proven to enhance student achievement and long term success. The real-world experiences and relationships students develop within the science, engineering, and technology community richly supplement and deepen learning in meaningful and enduring ways that go far beyond classroom experiences.
The team has two local fundraising opportunities this week. Monday, Over the Edge will donate 10% of all sales from 5-8 pm to the FIRST robotics team. This will also be the first chance for the public to be able to get an up close view of this season’s robot for FIRSTSTEAMWORKS. So, come out meet the robotics team and get a bite to eat.
Also on Wednesday, if you mention Manchester High School at Buffalo Wild Wings in Ann Arbor they will donate 20% of sales to the FIRST robotics program. Manchester raised more money last week than Livonia Franklin High School to move onto the second round of the Buffalo Wild Wings Spirit Challenge.
