Fr. Bosco and the people of St. Mary, Manchester, warmly invite all who are interested to join them at St. Mary’s parish church, on the corner of Main Street and Macomb, at 7:30 pm this coming Friday, March 2 to journey in prayer through Jerusalem’s fourteen Stations of the Cross. People of all faiths are welcome.

Since the first centuries, Christians have made pilgrimages to Jerusalem to more deeply experience the great love of God when His Son Jesus took up the cross and was crucified. The traditional 14 stations were identified by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century.

Catholic churches typically have images, either sculptural or painted, along their interior walls illustrating for meditation the 14 stations (locations) along the Way of the Cross. Prayers are prayed at each station. Therefore each of us has the opportunity to make a “pilgrimage” along the Way of the Cross right here in Manchester.

The purpose of this devotion is to “draw close to God so that He may draw close to us” (James 4:8). At this solemn and penitential time of Lent, reflecting and mediating on this journey of Jesus to the cross can be deeply meaningful. And praying together the Stations of the Cross can enhance this.

And so this Friday, March 2, at 7:30 pm you are especially invited to make this journey. The service is simple and prayerful, taking less than a half hour. Deacon Dennis Walters from St. Mary’s will give a brief explanation of the service before we begin, and prayer booklets will be available. Ponder in your heart the journey of our Lord – from his agony in the garden to Calvary and the hope of the resurrection – as we pray together the Stations of the Cross.
