Joan Gaughan

Retired professor and life-long Manchester resident Joan Gaughan will be presenting the fifth and last of a five part series about Victorian British women from 10:30 to 11:30 am next Saturday, March 17th at the Manchester District Library. It is free and open to everyone to attend, whether or not you’ve attended previously. Joan’s presentation will feature two and possibly three Victorian women travelers. The first is Frances Trolloppe who traveled to the very young, and raw (and to Mrs.Trolloppe, terribly uncivilized) United States. The second is Emily Eden who, with her sister, accompanied their brother to India when he was appointed Governor General. Emily wasn’t crazy about the British she encountered in India, but she rather enjoyed the Indians. She may also include the story of Florence Nightingale in Egypt.

For as little as $1 a month, you can keep Manchester-focused news coverage alive.
