Village Green – 1872 – Birds Eye View

Village Green – View of EUCC

submitted by Ray Berg, President of Manchester Historical Society

The next Manchester Area Historical Society general meeting is Thursday, May 10, 7:00 pm. For this month, we will meet at the Gazebo in Wurster Park on Main Street at 7:00 pm, where we will take a walking tour around the “Village Green.” We will stop at each building to discuss the vision John Gilbert had in establishing this “public square” as the center of his new village in 1833, how each building evolved, and how Gilbert’s vision has basically endured in today’s Wurster Park.

After this walking tour, we will go the Emanuel United Church of Christ Fellowship Hall near the northwest corner of the park, and have our business meeting, followed by refreshments.

In the event of rain, we’ll meet instead at 7:00 pm in the EUCC Fellowship Hall, and do our meeting and presentation there.

In either case, you can park in the Emanuel Church parking lot in the rear of the church, which provides the closest access to the Fellowship Hall. Or there is street parking along Main Street and in the general area of the park.

All are invited to come!
