Sunday evening, Cub Scout Bear Den of Pack 421 had two very special guests at their Den meeting at the Sharon United Methodist Church. Deputy Pete Williams and K9 Hans from the Washtenaw County Sheriffs Office put on an active K9 demonstration for their whole pack and their family members.

Leader Angie Flint explained, “Part of the Forensic elective for Bears was to learn how animals help law enforcement officers gather evidence. Deputy Williams took the time to explain how Hans works specifically in the jail and because of this, has a specially trained nose. Hans can identify things like nicotine and equipment like cell phones, which are legal, unless you are spending time in jail. The Scouts were able to see Hans identify nicotine that Deputy Williams hid on stage in front of everyone without being prompted. We learned that Hans loves hot dogs and his ball. Deputy Williams took the time to answer about 100 well thought out questions from our Scouts, and he was very impressed with their questions. A huge ‘Thank You’ to Deputy Williams, K-9 Hans and the Washtenaw County Sheriffs Office for making tonight’s meeting fun & educational!”

Every K9 unit in Washtenaw County has a trading card. This is Hans’s. (front)
