The Manchester District Library is getting ready to kick off its 2018 summer reading program. Sign up for the program begins on Friday, June 15th, the last day of school, and will feature a presentation by Zeemo the yo-yo man. All students are invited to attend the sign-up and participate in the program; they do not need to have a library card. This year the theme is “Libraries Rock!”

The summer reading program has categories for preschoolers, children, tweens and teens with different reading goals for each group. The goal for preschoolers ages 2 – 4 is to read/listen to any age-appropriate book for fifteen minutes per day, four days a week with a minimum weekly reading time of 1 hour per weekly prize and a total summer reading time of 5 hours. The goal for children ages 5 – 9 is to read any age-appropriate book or magazine for fifteen minutes per day, four days a week with a minimum weekly reading time of 1 hour per weekly prize for a total summer reading time of 5 hours. The goal for tweens ages 10 – 12 is to read for a minimum weekly reading time of 100 minutes for a total summer reading time of 500 minutes. The goal for teens ages 13 – 17 is to read for a minimum weekly reading time of 150 minutes for a total summer reading time of 750 minutes.

As participants meet their goal each week, they will earn a weekly prize. Meeting their summer reading program goal earns each participant an entry into the grand-prize drawing for their age group. Winners will be selected by random drawing on the final day of summer reading. (Winner will not be required to be present to win.) In addition to the prizes, students in the Manchester Community Schools who are going into 5th and 6th grade in the fall of 2018 are eligible for extra credit if they turn in their completed Summer Reading Program reading log in September.

Tamara Denby of the library states, “The Manchester District Library is dedicated to motivating students to improve their literacy and reading skills while having a bit of fun in the process. We encourage every child/teen, from preschool through high school to enroll in summer reading.”
