Ah, August … and perhaps getting away comes to mind. Classes offered by the Adult Learners Institute in Chelsea provide you with many interesting destinations, and without packing any luggage.

Exploring the islands and architecture of the Scandinavian islands or a visit to Egypt may be in order or even a trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, or possibly Uganda, the “pearl of Africa.” Perhaps you’d like to explore the impact of Western values on the traditional roles of Chinese women.  But if you would rather stay closer to home, you might like to explore of “Our Great Lakes and Marine Issues” and, even closer, a trip to “Historic Washtenaw”… a look at the east side of Ypsilanti and the old Fourth Ward of Ann Arbor. Or, you might want to explore Washtenaw’s Wildlife from A to Z while examining ways to make conservation work.

If the destination interests you less than the journey itself, you might investigate two Atlantic crossings … Charles Lindbergh’s epochal flight to Paris from New York, as well as the ever-intriguing journey of the Titanic, whose fateful crossing can be enhanced by the course in the “Lost Art Treasures of the Titanic. Or why not simply enjoy walking with David Larwa who has walked the El Camino … six times.

For those of you who would rather stay home and get organized, ALI provides a course in “Downsizing for the next stage of Life,” or you might want to learn about the beautiful and ancient art of origami. A course in things to do with your grandchildren—if you have them, or even if you don’t—might be helpful. And then, if you love football and food “Simple Recipes for Tailgating” should be helpful, while the course in the “Great American Songbook” will enable you to sing something in case you forget the words to your Alma Mater’s fight song.

On more serious notes, Ken Pfifer, who has clarified many religious and Biblical issues for us, will ask us to consider “Peace”. On the health front, while Dr. Bruno Giordani, an internationally recognized expert will explain “The Latest Research in Alzheimer’s Disease.” Charlie Taylor will examine the consequences of the opioid epidemic.

At the Fall Kick-off on August 14 at Silver Maples in Chelsea you will be able to learn more about the classes and meet with the instructors. Meanwhile, course catalogs and registration forms are available at the Manchester Market, the Manchester District Library, Pyramid Office Supply, Community Resource Center and the Manchester Wellness Center.

For as little as $1 a month, you can keep Manchester-focused news coverage alive.
