Fairy Doors coming to Manchester!

Fairy doors can be as simple or as complex as you like.

This month’s Third Thursday activities will include something new–Fairy Doors!

A fairy door is a miniature door, often set into the base of a tree or near the foundations of a building. Near or within the door may be small spaces where people can leave notes, wishes, or gifts for the “fairies.” The urban fairy doors of the Ann Arbor area have become legendary–now it’s Manchester’s turn to attract these small creatures to our village.

Fairy doors can be a portal into an imaginary world; they may be found indoors or out; and the important thing to remember is that it will house your own special fairy.

Fairies love shiny things! You may see some fairy doors around town where there’s a small receptacle for those shiny items such as coins, buttons, or other small gifts. Any items of value that the fairies collect will be donated to the Community Resource Center. Fairies also enjoy hearing from their fans, so you can leave them a note (but it must be very tiny … otherwise they won’t be able to handle it!)

The fairy doors will begin appearing around town this week in preparation for the Third Thursday on August 16. You never know where one will pop up, so this will be an exciting scavenger hunt for walkers, runners, and those who enjoy searching for new and different things in our community.

Businesses and individuals are welcome to create fairy doors. A limited number of pre-made fairy doors are available for purchase at $5. A fairy door booth will also be on Adrian Street on Aug. 16, where participants may make their own door for $5. Pre-painted doors and embellishments will be provided.

To obtain your own fairy door, please contact Marsha Chartrand at marshajc@gmail.com or Mary Bortmas at uphotos@comcast.net.

For as little as $1 a month, you can keep Manchester-focused news coverage alive.
