Inspired and informed by The Stewardship Network (www.stewardshipnetwork.org), the Iron Creek land community has a decade of stewardship experience to share. A presentation and guided walk to examine restoration work over time and across property lines will be hosted from 10 am to noon on Saturday, Sept. 29. The event is free. RSVPs are helpful, but not necessary. Join us Saturday morning at the North end of Mull Road (11007), Tipton. Contact Bob Kellum at rfkellum52@yahoo.com or 734-972-6564

Ecological land management is a cumulative process; the decisions of one season play out over many seasons. Fundamental to the process is the patience and humility to wait, listen and read what is happening around us. As we learn by doing, knowledge is as likely gained by failure as by success. Wisdom, however, is latent in any experience with nature.

One’s relationship to nature can be likened to a child’s relationship to its mother. A mother’s instincts for her child’s well being are powerful and mysterious. A child, in innocent curiosity or in defiant self-assertion, invariably challenges a mother’s best intentions. A dance ensues as each reacts to the other over days, months and seasons, year after year. Change and growth is inevitable–some intended and desirable; some unforeseen and unfortunate; some exquisitely beautiful, others tragically regrettable.

Honouring her child’s unique individuality while guiding its growth and maturation is the challenge of motherhood. Honouring one’s mother with one’s freely made choices is a child’s affirmation of its upbringing. How to honour an earth whose age and ways surpass comprehension is the never-ending challenge of the ecological steward.

Please join us on Sept. 29 to meet the people who have cared for this landscape for the past decade.
