Volleyball ends season in state quarterfinal game
The Manchester High School volleyball team has ended its season in quarter-final play last Tuesday at Ann Arbor Huron High School.
Meeting up with regional powerhouse St. Mary Catholic Central (Monroe) was the game that broke the varsity Dutch streak. SMCC won the quarter-final game 3-2 that evening, coming back from a 2-1 deficit to progress into the semi-finals of state level competition.
But the Lady Dutch can hold their heads high after an amazing season that was 25 years in the making.
“This was a very special group of girls, said coach Trisca Beasley. “We had huge goals and worked hard to make them happen.”
The team was 10-0 in the conference, with an overall record of 44 wins, 11 losses, and two splits for the season.
“Most of the 11 loses were from Division 1 teams,” Beasley added. “We won the District title for the second straight year, and the Regional title for the first time in 25 years.
“The girls fought hard in the final game, the quarterfinal, to the end,” she continued. “We lost to the team that was ranked number one throughout the season.”
Jayden Humphrey had 23 kills and Kayla Engel had 20 kills; Kayla Ridenour had 16 digs and 41 assists. Avery Collins had 4 blocks.
“Jayden and Avery have been with me on varsity for 4 years, Beasley said. “They have been great leaders, and dedicated players for all four years. Their level of play has improved tremendously. I will miss them next year.”
Other seniors on the team include Kate Pohs, McKenna Good, Hannah Woods, Stephanie Messman, and Anna Walz. Beasley said that each of these women have had an essential role in building the team to what it was this year.
“They leave very big shoes to fill for next year,” she added. “I wish them the very best in their futures. They are intelligent, funny, and full of personality. It was my honor to coach such a fine group of young ladies.”
