Sophomore Phoenix Waters is the state runner-up in girls wrestling, earning second place on the podium on Feb. 23.

Manchester High School sophomore Phoenix Waters, 15, competed on Sunday at MHSAA Girls State tournament, held at Adrian College’s Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.

Phoenix earned runner-up status with all of her bouts throughout the tournament ending in pins, until the final where she lost to a senior by a close decision of 4-6. In a field of 15 wrestlers at her weight class (130#), she came in second statewide.

Phoenix, who started wrestling with MYWAY in fifth grade, is the only girl on the Manchester High School team and consequently, the only girl from Manchester to attend the statewide event.

But, there are other up and coming female wrestlers in the community, including Phoenix’s sister, Roseanna, who is in middle school, and currently three MYWAY youth wrestlers who are girls. So she is serving as a role model for younger girls who want to achieve similar success in their wrestling careers.

Congratulations to Phoenix!
