Free income tax preparation assistance is available to low-income Manchester Area taxpayers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Managed locally through the United Way of Washtenaw County (UWWC), it is hosted in Manchester by the Community Resource Center located in Riverside Intermediate School, 710 East Main Street (entrance on east side of building). VITA is a national IRS program providing free tax preparation for individuals and families making $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited English proficiency.

Trained VITA volunteers and certified tax professionals work with eligible taxpayers to provide basic tax return preparation services and electronic filing; offer financial tips; and inform taxpayers about special tax credits they may qualify for such as Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled. Previous years returns may also be filed, as well as state Homestead Property Tax Credits and Home Heating Credits.

The VITA Program is by appointment only. Eligible taxpayers can call 734-428-7722 to schedule an appointment at the Community Resource Center. Limited appointments are still available through March 25th. Once your appointment is set, you will receive an intake form and list of required documents to bring with you to start your tax preparation.

For tech savvy individuals, My Free Taxes online is another free option for households making $66,000 or less. Public computers are available at the Community Resource Center if needed; just call 734-428-7722 to reserve a time.
