On Wednesday, April 24 from 7 to 8:30 pm, the Manchester United Methodist Church located at 501 Ann Arbor St will host “Creating Safe Communities: Understanding Domestic Violence, Suicide and Gun Safety,” a presentation by Dr. Nic Cooper, LPS, LMSW.

This presentation will help participants understand and identify the dynamics that underlie domestic violence, in order to recognize its early stages and know how to help themselves or others. Dr. Cooper will also build an understanding of suicide risk factors, and how to preventatively respond. Also included is a discussion of how gun owners can keep people in their homes safe from unintentional shootings.

A former long-time Manchester resident, Dr. Cooper has spent 45 years in education. His background includes being a middle school and a high school counselor, developing and working in alternative education programs, and being a middle school assistant principal and principal. He also has worked as a probation officer, as a substance abuse counselor, and as a personal and family counselor in mental health agencies. He coauthored the books How to Keep Being a Parent When Your Child Stops Being a Child (with Rick McCoy), and Developing a Learning Classroom (with Dr. Betty Garner.) Now retired, Nic is a member of the Washtenaw County group of Moms Demand Action and presents the Be SMART for Kids program.

For as little as $1 a month, you can keep Manchester-focused news coverage alive.
