Heather Rathburn hopes that “iT.” can make a difference in your life!

Heather Rathburn has always enjoyed the concept of home. She loved being a stay at home mom when her boys were growing up. She owned a popular business for many years called “House to Home Interiors” and consulted with people to renovate their homes, offices, and more.

She spent 10 years working in administrative jobs at the University of Michigan, and last summer, while mulling over her future, realized that what she was doing didn’t “spark joy” in her. She felt like she could put to use her love of all things home-related, combine it with her experiences in event planning and organization learned during her career at U of M, and really use her talents to help people.

“I love to help people,” she says simply. “Helping others is what excites me, what brings me joy. So I decided to get creative, and I came up with this idea that I called ‘it.’ It doesn’t matter what ‘it’ is; I sew, I craft, I create, I organize, I clean, I plant … I have a whole menu of things that I can do for people.”

Obviously, her primary objective is to provide a steady source of income, and a regular schedule with clientele. But starting out, she has decided to be totally open about her options–and yours!

“I’m staying broad initially, trying to cater to people’s needs, and I’ve already done a lot of small jobs. Some of them are ongoing and some of them are just ‘one-and-done’ jobs. I hope that word of mouth will help my business grow. I’m reaching out to realtors to help sellers to stage their homes for sale. I did some gardening for a client who has bad knees and can’t get down to do that kind of work. I can clean and prep a room for painting. Anything that you can’t or don’t want to do, that will help you get something you want done, is what ‘iT.’ is all about.”

Rathburn’s motto is, “When help is what you want, iT. is what you need.” Her mission: to accomplish house chores for busy people who lack time, desire, or ability; her vision statement is to inspire people to simplify their home and create lasting routines or processes to maximize their free time.

“People are so busy,” she says. “I think a lot of times they’re just immobilized by the sheer volume of things to do. If I can help someone to get their ‘to do list’ to ‘done,’ that makes me feel good.”

You can even give the gift of iT. to someone you love! For Mother’s Day, Rathburn is offering a gift certificate for a 90 minute consult, which will help determine that person’s iT. The certificate, which comes in the form of a drink coaster, is available by going to her website, youneedme-it.com and filling out a contact form. Your mom–or anyone else who might receive this thoughtful gift–will have time to determine if their need is just for an occasional chore, or if a monthly ‘iT.” (by the half-day or whole day) is just the right answer to iT. There’s also a short, fun video on the site that explains more about iT.
