Enjoy this summer’s ice cream socials
submitted by Mary Sue Moore
Beginning in June, six area churches will be hosting their ice cream socials. Many delicious food items are offered that might include beef barbecue, hot, or cold, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, German and American potato salads, coleslaw, baked beans, macaroni & cheese and several beverage options. The meal is then topped off with a variety of homemade cakes (some also serve pies) and a generous serving of ice cream with toppings.
A new feature in recent years is the availability of take-outs. Many guests take advantage of this convenience.
Often there will be a bazaar or country store that offers delicious homemade baked goods, craft items and other specialties unique to each church. For the younger set, some churches feature a “Fish Pond” with many surprises to be found at the end of the fishing pole. At every social, guests often linger long after they have finished their meal to enjoy fellowship with friends, old and new.
The socials begin at either 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. and run into early evening. Watch for each church’s publicity, or give them a call or check out their website. Invite your friends, bring a carload and enjoy. The schedule is below.
- Thursday, June 20 – St. Paul United Church of Christ, 122 W. Michigan Ave., Saline
- Wednesday, June 26 – Sharon United Methodist Church, corner of M-52 and Pleasant Lake Road, Manchester
- Tuesday, July 2 – St. James United Church of Christ, 11005 W. Michigan Ave., between Saline & Clinton
