The new “DD” is getting ready to do a test run soon.

After many scheduling and contractor issues this winter and spring, Jeff and Crystal Fahey are feeling nearly ready to get their new business under way.

And what will it be called?

A survey on Facebook this spring came up with a virtual tie between “Dutch Dairy” and “Dam Dairy,” so when the sign goes up on the building, it will say simply “DD.”

“People can call it what they like,” says Jeff. “Many businesses are going with just initials now–even Dairy Queen is now DQ; Kentucky Fried Chicken is KFC. So we decided, why not DD?”

The Faheys said the Washtenaw County Health Department has cleared them to open and as of Monday morning they are waiting on final review of their building and electrical inspections by the Western Washtenaw Construction Authority. Once those are signed off, they should be ready to do a “soft” open.

Initially they will be serving just soft-serve and a few flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, and probably hot dogs, from their walk-up windows. As they complete the “new” portion of the building and receive permanent occupancy permits, they will be able to expand their offerings and provide indoor service as well as the walk-up window.

Fahey says that they have been very fortunate to have great local contractors helping them out–including Ron Milkey, Mike Austin, John Schaible, Jack Rathburn, and Corey Schmitt. They have also done a huge amount of work themselves. There were other contractors with whom they weren’t so lucky, but he stresses that local support has been crucial to keeping them on track during a difficult winter.

“In the long run, we know this is going to be good for us and good for the community,” he says. “Everyone has been so supportive and we truly appreciate that. It has been hard to juggle everything.”

The Manchester community will certainly welcome this attractive and tasty addition to downtown!
