To the Editor:

The country I love is represented by the Statue of Liberty which stands boldly in the New York Harbor. Years ago, it welcomed my grandparents to America. Inscribed on the statue are these words: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free … Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.” This represents the country love! The country I’m proud of. A generous and compassionate country.

People come to the U.S. for a reason, often fleeing grave dangers to themselves and their families; often taking the most menial of jobs; often becoming productive contributors to our economy and our communities. Of course I believe in immigration and border laws, but where is our compassion and welcoming spirit? Where is the foundation upon which our country was built?

Fortunately, America didn’t turn its back on my grandparents. That is the country love!
