Letter to the Editor: Gloom Town or Boom Town?
August 17, 2019
Are you feeling the frustration and concern that I’m feeling about all the empty and soon-to-be empty storefronts in our town? We’ve just added a new park along the River Raisin and an extended trail to bring people to town, but then we have nothing to offer them but empty stores with more yet to come.
Yes, some of the buildings have been empty because the building owners choose not to rent them, but others are just waiting for new owners. Filling these buildings takes a community.
New businesses take the biggest risk by putting their money and time into getting a business going. But, if we want our town to be alive and vibrant, the responsibility lies with all of us. We ALL need to support our local businesses. I hear people say, “I can get it cheaper at a big box store.” But that statement does not take into consideration the money that our businesses donate to support our schools, teams, events, and clubs. The few cents more you pay per item is returning dividends to Manchester rather than going towards supporting a CEO in some other community. And don’t forget the extra dollars spent on gas and wear and tear to our vehicles. This money adds up.
Are you aware that three new stores have opened up on Adrian Street? Sassy Peacock, Shabby on the Street, and Handmaiden have worked tirelessly to provide us with new merchandise. Have you visited the Historical Society‘s new museum and gift shop? Check them all out while continuing to support the other remaining stores in town.
I have a challenge for all my fellow Manchesterites. Two to three times a week, every week, utilize a service, buy an item, or purchase food from one of our downtown businesses. If we can help them be successful, then more people will be willing to put their money and time into opening new businesses and services. Imagine a thriving community where all our needs can be met right here in our own town! We cannot complain if we aren’t doing our part. Join me!
Let’s Make it Manchester, folks!
