It may have been chilly and a little dreary outside, but inside Manchester shops it was warm and welcoming as downtown businesses kicked off the holiday shopping season with Small Business Saturday on November 30.

Sue LaRocque of River Raisin Antiques & Mercantile said she was extremely happy with her shop’s performance over the weekend and thanked the local shoppers who made a point to stop in and enjoy her wide selection of merchandise and she appreciated the conversations that are always fostered around her counter, as well. She said it was a “wonderful show of support” from our small community.

Steelegrafix, a business that is not normally open on Saturdays, also had a fantastic turnout for their business this past weekend. Dawn Steele posted in a Facebook message, “I cannot express enough gratitude for all that came out today and supported our business. The people have spoken and they want a vital downtown!”

Karla Zyhan of Shabby on the Street in the mill was concerned that the hot rivalry of the Ohio State-Michigan game might affect turnout in her shop, as well as the adjacent “Handmaiden” store, but said that waves of shoppers came in throughout the day. Kathy LaHaie of the Sassy Peacock on Adrian Street was also happy with the customer traffic at her store.

Local eateries offered various specials throughout the day and reported good foot traffic in their businesses.
