Interim Superintendent to begin Monday, Jan. 6
The Manchester Community Schools Board of Education hired a new interim superintendent, Kevin Upton, at its December 18 meeting.
Upton, a resident of Ann Arbor who is currently employed at the Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD) as its Curriculum Coordinator, has been contracted for half-time service in the district’s top post through the end of the school year (June 30).
“He will be in the district three days/two days on alternating weeks,” explained School Board President Chris Fegan, “based on the needs of our district and of the WISD. We are very happy to have this added connection with the ISD and also to utilize Kevin’s heavy background in curriculum development.”
Upton, who also concurrently serves as Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction in the Lincoln School District, additionally is a teacher educator at the University of Michigan School of Education and has 20 years of professional experience in K-12 public education, according to his LinkedIn profile. He formerly served in the Milan schools and with Detroit Public Schools. He is a 1993 graduate of Michigan State University and received his masters in Education from Wayne State University in 2002. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Educational/Instructional Technology from MSU.
During his tenure in Manchester, the board will continue to focus on the search for a replacement for former superintendent Nick Steinmetz, who will start his new position with Madison Schools in Lenawee County on January 1.
Tony Hollow and Linda Blair, who conducted the previous superintendent search, are “well versed with the district,” Fegan said. “They know our specific needs; we have met with them, and we have a timeline in place for finding a new superintendent by June 30.”
