Registration is open for the Department of Natural Resource’s Happy Little 5K. No matter how you reach the finish line – walk, run or hike – you pick the pace and the place. Just be sure to complete your virtual 5K anywhere outdoors sometime between April 17-26. That’s 10 days including two full weekends and, for good measure, Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 24). For only $34 per person, your virtual race will make a real difference – all race proceeds (approximately $10 from each registration) will support tree-planting efforts at state parks throughout Michigan. This year the state has partnered with Bob Ross Inc. Each participant will receive a Bob Ross themed t-shirt, medal and race bib.

While the Manchester area is full of great locations for completing a 5K, one option is Watkins Lake County Preserve and State Park, which features 5.8 miles of trails, including five miles that follow a former rail bed. To get to Watkins Lake, from West Austin Road take Sharon Hollow Road south to Herman Road, then Herman west to Horning Road. Take a right onto Horning, and in .2 miles, turn right onto Arnold Road. The parking lot will be on your right past the lake. A Recreation Passport is required for use of the parking lot.

To register for the 5K or for more information on the Happy Little Trees program visit Michigan.gov/DNRHappyLittleTrees. Questions? Please contact Michelle Coss via email at CossM@Michigan.gov.

For as little as $1 a month, you can keep Manchester-focused news coverage alive.
