Varsity basketball chalks up two losses in first week of season
Having just learned on Friday afternoon that they would be allowed to play less than three days later, it was a fast weekend of practice and setting skills in place.
On Monday night, the Dutch faced the East Jackson Trojans and came up on the short end of a 66-33 score.
“We struggled early and often with turnovers against the experienced East Jackson team,” said coach Zachary Neal. “But this was a great learning experience for our young team.”
The Dutch were led by Senior captain Ryan Mann’s 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots.
On Wednesday, the Dutch met up with Michigan Center and again scored 33 points; however the Cardinals dunked in a total of 74.
“Once again we struggled with turnovers,” Neal said. “Michigan Center is considered the conference favorite this season, so this was a great test for us.”
Jaxon McGuigan led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds; Mann followed up his strong debut with six points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots.
Neal added, “The key to our season is limiting turnovers, which will allow us to have more chances on the offensive end of the floor. After watching the film of the first two games, we are excited about the improvements we can make.”
This week’s games include a meet up at Addison (cancelled) on Tuesday, Tecumseh (cancelled) on Wednesday, and a home game vs. Grass Lake on Thursday. JV games begin at 5:30 pm; Varsity play begins at 7 pm. Check for any updates at the athletic department’s site.
