Varsity basketball chalks up two wins this week
It was a very busy week for the varsity Dutchmen, playing three games while being short-handed due to injuries.
Tuesday, the Dutch headed to state-ranked #2 Hanover Horton, and lost to the Comets by a 75-27 score.
However, said coach Zach Neal, “It was great learning experience for us as they play the brand of basketball we are striving for.”
Ryan Mann kept up his strong play with six points and 10 rebounds, while Carson Horky scored his first four points as a Varsity player.
On Thursday, Manchester hosted Whitmore Lake in place of a cancelled game vs. Napoleon, where they earned their first win of the season.
“We went on a 22-3 scoring run in the fourth quarter to win 65-51,” said Neal. “It was a great team win, where everybody played a role.”
Anthony Bargardi found his shooting stroke with 13 points; Preston Mackenzie also had 13 and Grant Tar led with five assists.
The junior varsity Dutchmen earned their first win of the year against the Whitmore Lake JV as well.
On Saturday, the teams traveled to Addison, where the varsity won by a score of 45-37.
“We finished the game on a 25-10 scoring run,” Neal said. “It was a great team defensive effort, and senior Liam Riley showed his continued growth with a great effort in his increased role off of the bench.”
The team was led by Bargardi’s 15 points (including three 3-pointers), Mann’s 15 points and 8 rebounds, and Jaxon McGuigan’s seven points and four assists.
The Junior Varsity lost to the JV Panthers by a “one point nail-biter,” according to Neal.
