A week of lopsided scores for the Varsity Dutch
It was another tough week for the varsity Flying Dutchmen.
Tuesday at Grass Lake, the Dutch faced the Warriors for what would be their closest game of the week, ending with a 53-31 loss.
“We battled throughout the game and a Preston Mackenzie 3-pointer cut the game to 32-24 late in the third quarter,” said coach Zachary Neal. “But they pulled away late in the game with solid free throw shooting.”
On Thursday, Manchester hosted Hanover Horton, who handed them a 66-17 loss.
“Hanover is undefeated and looked every bit like the #2 team in the state,” Neal said. “They overwhelmed us with defense and hot shooting early and often.”
The Dutchmen finished strong and Liam Riley played a strong game hitting a first quarter. Freshman Ryan Kelly also filled up the defensive stat sheet in the fourth quarter, running all over the floor.
On Saturday, traveling to meet the Napoleon Pirates, the Dutch knew this game would be another challenge.
“They’re very experienced and talented,” Neal explained. “We did a really good job of breaking their press but we couldn’t convert with points on the other end. Preston Mackenzie stayed very aggressive offensively, hitting multiple shots. Ryan Mann led the team with nine points.”
The game ended with Manchester on the short end of a 70-25 score.
The team’s philosophy this year has been to learn something from each game they play, and continue to improve for next year’s season, Neal said.
This week the Dutch will host Addison on Monday night and Napoleon Wednesday, then travel to Vandercook Lake on Friday for their final game of the regular season. Junior Varsity games begin at 5:30 pm, followed by Varsity action at 7 pm. District play begins the following week, at Hudson.
