To the Editor:

My husband and I attended the most recent Passport to Manchester event in which an agri-tour took us to the Bross and Horning farms. At the Bross farm we were led on a tour, given a brief talk on what farming means, and asked a myriad of questions about what is involved in farming on such a large scale. All of our questions were expertly answered by Gary Bross and his daughter. In addition, we were given a brief history of the Bethel Church Road area which we learned was once a Native American Trail.

At the Horning Dairy Farm we were treated to lunch and a concert by a delightful trio of stringed instruments and a historical perspective of the music we were hearing. We then toured and learned multitudes about dairy farming today presented by three generations of the Horning family. All of our hosts were not only knowledgeable and passionate about their chosen professions, but made us feel welcome into their busy lives.

We learned so much last weekend! We went home talking about all that we had learned and how much we had enjoyed ourselves! I have to admit that this was a pleasantly unexpected result of what I feared might be a little dry and unexciting event. Not so. If you get a chance, try to attend the remaining events.

Hopefully, we’ll see you there.

Tim and Elizabeth Polk
